UPELLURI HAD SHOWN HIM a hidden room within the network of caverns, just another cave really, its entrance disguised by a chicanelike mass of rocks. Twelve years old, Ullikummis had followed, letting the older Annunaki set the pace.
“The only true power, Ullikummis,” Upelluri explained, “is knowledge of your enemy. The more complete that knowledge is, the more absolute the power you wield. Come.”
Ullikummis nodded his heavy stone head in agreement, his arrow-slit eyes peering into the darkness as they made their way through the long tunnel and into the next cave.
For a moment the cave seemed dark, too, but gradually Ullikummis’s eyes adjusted and he saw the equipment there. An astrogator’s chair had been mounted close to the rough wall of the cave, and a powerful telescope was propped beside it. Records—bound sheets of papyrus—were stacked close to the chair, their pages alive with markings made in a delicate hand. Upelluri walked across to the astrogator’s chair and pushed his palm against it until it chirruped to life, the spiny protrusions appearing on its surface for a moment as they registered his genetic imprint before retracting into the shell of the chair at his command.
“Do you need me to sit?” Ullikummis asked.
“No,” Upelluri told him as the chair’s built-in projector came to life, displaying a holographic map of a blue-green planet floating in the dark embrace of space.
“What am I looking at?” Ullikummis asked.
“This is the planet Earth, the planet upon which we are standing,” Upelluri explained. “Your birthplace and the Annunaki’s adopted home. Pretty, isn’t it?”
Ullikummis nodded a little self-consciously, associating such terms with the ghastly princesses he had shared dining tables with over the years at family functions, and now utterly detesting the connotations of the vile word.
Upelluri waved his hand over the sensor on the chair’s arm, and the Earth became smaller as the image appeared to expand. In a moment they could see the asteroid belt, the red planet and others. Upelluri swung his hand around and the image swung, too, moving in the other direction, sweeping around and past the Earth with its banks of white clouds, through the orbits of two other planets before pulling to a halt before the fiery ball at the center of the solar system. “The sun,” Upelluri explained.
“I know,” Ullikummis said, his voice tentative. Was Upelluri insane? What could this possibly be teaching him that he didn’t already know?
Upelluri held up his scarred arms, and Ullikummis saw the beetlelike shapes that appeared to be crawling over his moon-dusted scales. “The sun did this to me,” Upelluri said in a solemn voice. “Forced me to hide from it. The sun is my enemy.”
Despite himself, Ullikummis stepped back, feeling fearful of the older Annunaki at that moment, so intense was Upelluri’s passion.
“I study it every day,” Upelluri told him. “I monitor the sun and I record every flare and every shift in it, as best as I can from my hiding place here so that, one day, I may use these things to my advantage and defeat the sun.
